As a teacher of African and Afro-Cuban percussion, Ray's knowledge and study spans both continents and decades. - Since travelling to New York to study in the 1980s, Ray has studied with master musicians in Cuba, the Ivory Coast and has travelled regularly to Ghana for the past 17 years.

I’ve been studying with Ray Pereira for 1 year now, starting as a complete beginner. I have found Ray's teaching style to be extremely intensive, but digestible, fun and understanding. I feel he has a way of adapting his teaching techniques to the way different students learn. Every week I am blown away by how much we are able to learn in relatively short periods of time. “Since beginning classes with Ray in 1997, he has led me through many exciting, but often challenging developmental stages with my percussion. The journey has taken me from the early days of trying to get my technique right, learning to play, and hear the bell properly, being able to drum as in integrated part of a group, through to being able to free solo with confidence.
Throughout this time, Ray's own teaching techniques have developed and progressed, refining how best to lead his students though each stage, getting the best out of each individual as they progress. I have found that Ray will always have the next challenge ready for his students when they are ready, knowing how and when to push them
Ray has shown me the immense depth to percussion, introducing me to not only the rhythms, songs and dance, but as importantly, the incredibly rich culture and background to this music. This was partly achieved through travelling with Ray to Ghana on the Kusun Study Tour. The tour is an incredible opportunity to immerse and imbed the music, and Africa, into your blood.
The more I play, the more I realise that there is so much more I can learn, and how little I actually know. I know that Ray will continue to help me explore this exciting music, and develop my own abilities to express it."

"I have known, learned from and performed with Ray over the last five years.
Rarely do you meet a musician who's depth in theoretical knowledge matches his performance ability. I first met Ray at a show and drum workshop in Fremantle, Western Australia. At the time he was touring nationally with Master Ghanaian musician, Nii Tettey Tetteh. Since that first meeting I have continued to study under Ray and his teachings have helped me progress in my career as a musician and gain work with national touring bands.
I have found Ray's teaching style to be uncomplicated and effective and he maintains the authenticity of the music. His knowledge of West African rhythms have been meticulously studied and performed in his travels to Ghana and surrounding countries over the last sixteen years. He continues his travel to Ghana through his involvement with the study tour held by the Ghana Drum School in Accra. I was part of the study tour in 2008 and it was one of the most interesting and rewarding experiences of my life."
"Ray has the unique ability to translate the knowledge and experience he has gained through his years of study and performance in a fluid and uncomplicated manner. He maintains the authenticity of the rhythms that he teaches and passes on the philosophy and cultural context of their origin."
Kanchana – Musician and Teacher.
